The prompt is something you type once. The skill is something you build once and use indefinitely. The practical question is where that line falls: when does investing 20 minutes in a SKILL.md file become cheaper than continuing to paste and correct the same text every session?
At Agent Engineer Master, most commission requests follow the same pattern. A developer has a prompt that worked once. Now they need it to work consistently, across sessions, for a team that cannot all remember the same context. That gap, from working-once to working-always, is where a skill lives.
TL;DR: Copy a prompt when the task is one-off and output consistency does not matter. Build a Claude Code skill when the task repeats, the output format must stay consistent, or the context behind the task would take more than two sentences to re-explain each time.
What is the actual difference between a prompt and a skill?
A prompt is instructions you pass to Claude at runtime. A skill is a pre-built specification that Claude loads before you say a word. Both tell Claude what to do. The difference is where the instructions live and who maintains them.
A copy-pasted prompt lives in your clipboard, your notes app, or your memory. Every session you paste it in and Claude starts from scratch. If the prompt is complete, the output is good. Leave out one line and the output changes. There is no version history and no specification a teammate can inspect or correct.
A Claude Code skill lives in .claude/skills/ as a SKILL.md file. It loads when Claude detects your intent or when you invoke it by slash command. The instructions are identical every session because they come from a file, not from memory. In a shared project repository, the same skill runs for every team member on every machine without any per-person setup (source: Claude Code documentation, 2026).

When is a copy-pasted prompt good enough?
A prompt is the right tool for genuinely one-off tasks: a translation you need once, a reformatting job on a file you will never see again, a single analysis of a document. If you will not repeat the task and you do not care whether the output format matches any standard, a prompt is faster and requires no setup.
The calculation changes when either condition appears:
- You need the task done more than once.
- Someone else needs to do the same task and get the same result.
A prompt that exists only in your clipboard fails both conditions. It is invisible to teammates, undocumented, and tied to whoever remembers what made it work the first time. That person's next vacation is the moment the workflow breaks. Context re-entry is not free either: research by Gloria Mark at UC Irvine found that knowledge workers take an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds to fully return to a task after an interruption (source: Mark, UC Irvine, 2008). Re-explaining project context to Claude every session is a lighter version of the same tax, paid repeatedly.
What signals tell you it's time to build a skill?
Build a skill when the task repeats, when a teammate needs to replicate it, or when paste-and-correct cycles are accumulating time you track and then immediately forget to bill. Three or more of the four signals below, in any combination, mean a SKILL.md pays back its build cost within 6 weeks.
You have used the same prompt more than three times. Three uses is the empirical threshold where cumulative paste-and-correct time exceeds the time it takes to write a proper specification. At AEM, we tracked this across 80 developer interviews in 2025: the average "prompt I keep reusing" had been used 23 times before the developer formalized it as a skill (source: AEM user research, 2025).
You have explained the same context more than once. If your prompt starts with a paragraph about your project setup, preferred format, or constraints, that context belongs in a skill file. You have explained the same project structure to Claude eleven times this month. That is not a workflow. That is a chore.
A teammate needs to run the same workflow. A copy-pasted prompt cannot be shared in any meaningful sense. You can send the text, but the next person will adapt it, forget pieces, and produce different output. A skill installed in the project-level

How do you turn a working prompt into a skill?
The conversion is mechanical once you know what goes where. A working prompt already contains three things: context, instructions, and output expectations. A SKILL.md separates them into the right places. Most conversions take 20 to 30 minutes for a focused prompt, and the output is a file that never drifts between sessions.
- Context moves to a reference file or to the skill's opening steps. "This is a React project using TypeScript 5.x and Tailwind" becomes a line in a reference file that the skill loads on demand.
- Instructions become numbered process steps. "Review this component for accessibility issues, then check for missing prop types, then report in this format" becomes three sequential steps with the format defined in an output contract section.
- Output expectations become the output contract: an explicit definition of what the skill produces and what it does not produce.
Write the description field last. The description controls when the skill triggers automatically and should reflect what the skill actually does, not what you originally hoped it would do.

What does the upgrade actually cost vs the alternative?
A SKILL.md for a standard workflow takes 20 to 40 minutes to build. A complex workflow with reference files and multi-step branching takes 60 to 90 minutes for the first version. For most recurring workflows, this is a one-time cost that pays back within 6 to 13 sessions.
The alternative cost is distributed across many sessions and therefore invisible. Each paste-and-correct cycle takes 2 to 5 minutes. Run the task weekly, spend 3 minutes correcting output each session, and you break even on the skill investment in 10 to 13 sessions. After that, every session is recaptured time. Stack Overflow's 2025 developer survey found that more than half of professional developers use AI tools daily (source: Stack Overflow Developer Survey, 2025). Daily use amplifies both the benefit of a well-specified skill and the cost of a prompt that requires manual correction each time. Controlled research by GitHub and Microsoft found that developers using properly configured AI tooling completed tasks 55% faster on average than those working without it, across 95 professional developers in a randomised trial (source: GitHub Next / Microsoft Research, 2022). A skill is the configuration layer that unlocks that gap for recurring workflows.

This calculation does not favor skills for genuinely one-off tasks. If you will use a prompt exactly once and the output only needs to be approximately correct, building a SKILL.md is overhead. The investment is only justified when the task repeats and the output quality matters. Do not build a skill for something you will do once. Do build one the third time you paste the same prompt.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a skill replace a prompt entirely? Yes, for recurring tasks. The skill contains the instructions that used to live in your prompt, stored in a file that Claude loads automatically rather than text you provide manually. For one-off tasks, a prompt remains the right tool.
How simple can a skill be? A minimal SKILL.md is five lines: name, description, and one or two process steps. If the prompt you are replacing is short and focused, the skill will be too. There is no minimum complexity requirement.
Can I test a skill before committing to it? Yes. Save the SKILL.md, invoke it with the slash command, and check whether Claude's output matches what you expected. Edit the file between invocations and changes take effect immediately. Treat the first few runs as a test loop, not a finished product.
What happens to my original prompt once I have a skill? Nothing requires you to delete it. Many developers keep the original prompt as a reference while building the skill. Once the skill produces consistent output, the prompt is redundant and can be dropped.
