A skill built for your own project assumes your folder structure, your installed MCP servers, your Claude Code version, and the exact inputs you happened to test. A portable skill assumes none of those. What Makes a Skill Portable vs. Project-Specific?

A portable Claude Code skill works correctly when installed in a project the author has never seen. A skill that requires its author's mental model to function is not distributable. It is a private script.

Project-specific skills have one or more of these failure modes:

Each of these replacements makes the skill describe what it needs rather than assuming what exists. The pattern is the same in every case: replace implicit knowledge with explicit format. How Do I Test That My Skill Works Outside My Own Project?

Test in a fresh Claude Code session with a project structure different from your own. Fresh means no prior context about your codebase, your folder conventions, or your installed MCP servers. The session should face the skill exactly as a new installer would: no hints, no handholding.

The test protocol:

  1. Create a temporary test project with a different folder structure than your real project. If you use src/components/, test with app/modules/ or a flat directory.
  2. Open a fresh Claude Code session with no prior context about your project.
  3. Install only the skill being tested — not your full skill library.
  4. Trigger the skill using natural language, not the slash command. Natural language tests whether the description field triggers correctly in an unfamiliar context.
  5. Observe where it breaks. Every error message points at an assumption to remove.

This is the Claude A / Claude B method applied to distribution. Claude A (the session that built the skill) has context the installer doesn't have. Claude B (the fresh session) has none. If the skill works in Claude A's session but not Claude B's, it's not portable.

The scale of the problem makes this test worth running. Stack Overflow's 2025 Developer Survey found that 84% of developers use or plan to use AI tools in their workflow. A non-portable skill published to SkillsMP is a bad first-run experience for the majority of developers who will attempt to install it (Stack Overflow Developer Survey, 2025).

Run this test with at least three different project structures before publishing. If you can recruit a colleague to install and run the skill without your guidance, even better. Their first-run experience is exactly what an SkillsMP installer will have.

What Does a Production-Ready Portable Skill Actually Look Like?

A skill ready for distribution has four things the original version lacks. The original version was built for one project, tested in one context, and documented for one developer. The distributable version defines its requirements, generalizes its steps, and gives an installer enough information to run it without talking to the author first.

  1. A requirements section listing every external dependency, with optionality noted.
  2. Parameterized steps that work without specific folder names, tool names, or team conventions.
  3. A clear output contract defining what the skill produces and what it explicitly does not produce.
  4. Evidence of cross-project testing — either in the listing notes or a linked test document.

This is not a high bar. It's the bar that separates a useful community skill from a prompt in a trenchcoat.

A clear "this skill was built for Next.js projects using the App Router" tells installers exactly what they're getting.
